The International Day of Democracy is a good reason to pay attention to the state of democracy in the world.
The ideals of freedom, respect for human rights and the principle of periodic and unfalsified elections based on universal suffrage are important elements of democracy. In turn, democracy provides natural conditions for the protection and effective implementation of human rights. These values are reflected in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and further explained in the International Act on Civil and Political Rights, which enshrines the set of political rights and civil liberties that are the backbone of truly democratic states.
The connection between democracy and human rights is recorded in Article 21 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
